Data, Information & Governance

“We need to do something with data.” That’s often how it starts. But many questions quickly follow. What data do we actually have? Where is it located? Is it usable? Who is responsible? What ground rules do we agree on? And do we start with data management, governance, a few pilots, or immediately organization-wide?

At the same time, a lot of valuable knowledge is still in people’s heads and is at risk of being lost due to, for example, outflow or aging. Everyone sees the importance, but due to the daily grind, there’s rarely time to properly consider all these questions.

That’s precisely when it helps not to try and solve everything at once. First, together, gain a clear understanding of what already exists, what is truly needed, and what choices are involved. Start small where possible, think bigger where necessary. This way, a workable method for organizing data, information, ownership, and responsibilities emerges step by step.
